Colorful Rainbow Boy Cake Smash

I was so excited when Asher’s mom reached out to me to schedule a cake smash for her son. I did Asher’s newborn photos a year ago. Asher was such a well-behaved, cooperative model for me for his newborn session! I was looking forward to capturing this next milestone for his mom and dad.

Typically I give parents a list of recommendations for bakeries to purchase the cake from. Asher’s mom asked if it would be okay for her to make the cake herself. “Sure!” I said. She told me how special it was to her to be able to make it for him. When I walked in that morning I saw a cake sitting on the table and asked her if she decided to buy a cake instead. “No, I made that!” she replied, to which I was completely impressed. The cake looked so professionally made and well-done. On top of that their oven broke so she cooked it in the microwave! Can you believe that?

I told her that I had to try a piece too, and I was super impressed. It tasted better than so many cakes I’ve tried. Mom told me that during COVID she started making cakes as a hobby. Eventually she decided to post about them on her Instagram. I was so impressed that I had asked her if she wanted to be on my bakery recommendation list.

As for Asher it took him a little to warm up at first (he may or may not have pooped while he was doing his portrait shots!) Once we put the cake in front of him he went to town with it. He sure loved his mama’s baking! We eventually had to take it away because he kept eating it! His mom told me for the frosting she mixed yogurt and buttercream together, since she knew he’d love the yogurt. What a genius idea! And when I tried it myself I didn’t notice the yogurt at all.
