Best Brooklyn 1st Birthday Session
Thea’s mom wanted a colorful theme to reflect Thea’s fun and playful personality. She chose the pink drip funfetti cake, and we paired it with my cute rainbow banner. Thea’s mom selected the light cream dress I brought. It coordinated perfectly and ensured that Thea was the focal point of the images.
Thea was so cute when it came to her cake. Instead of diving right in and taking a chunk of cake or frosting, she delicately went around the rim of the cake picking off each of the dollops of frosting until they were all gone. It was so sweet watching her plan out how she was going to destroy her cake. When she was done she realized she had a whole chunk of sugar and frosting left in front of her.
I always start with portraits prior to the cake smash. Starting with portraits before the cake smash helps babies warm up to the camera/flash, and also helps them get warmed up to me. Many babies haven’t had a lot of social interaction given the pandemic, and haven’t seen too many new faces.
I love using my wooden bowl trick to help babies stay put, as many of them are on the go and want to crawl around everywhere. Few are typically walking at this age. Usually they’ll stay inside for a brief period of time- at least long enough for me to get the shot!
